Neck Tie Scrunchies

I've been volunteering with Helping Hands MN, a charity that collects donations from the community and holds free shopping events for those in need. Apparently, no one is in need of old polyester ties in blah colors, hahaha! So I needed to find a way to upcycle these ties into something people might like.

I didn't have enough pretty ties in coordinating colors to make pillow covers or a table runner ... but I did have enough to make an assortment of scrunchies!

Supplies:
  • One Regular Size Tie
  • Sewing Machine and/or Needle & Thread
  • Pins
  • Iron
  • Scissors & Ruler
  • Elastic, 8 inches long

Cut the tie apart - follow the back seam all the way up. Cut away the trim fabric and discard the tie stuffing.

Iron the tie flat on a low setting. Cut a rectangle, approximately 18 inches long and 4 to 5 inches wide, depending on how much fabric you have to work with.

Fold in half, right sides together. Sew long edge together with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Backstitch at the beginning and the end. You'll end up with a tube. Turn right-side out.

Feed elastic through the tube. Knot the ends of the elastic securely. Fold one side of the tie-tube under about half an inch.

Draw the other side of the tie-tube into the folded side, so that the folded side overlaps the other end by at least a 1/2 inch.

Pin the material in place, making sure the material is even on both sides. Sew together with a 1/4 inch hem allowance.

Make some more!
